Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood Flooring: A Complete Buyer's Guide


When most people say "hardwood flooring," they often mean two very different products: solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. Both contain real wood and can look identical when installed, but their construction, performance, and ideal applications differ significantly. Here's what you need to know before you buy.


What Is Solid Hardwood?


Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like — a single, solid piece of wood milled to a uniform thickness (typically 3/4 inch). It's the classic hardwood floor that's been used for centuries. The entire plank is real wood from top to bottom.


Best for: Above-grade living spaces like living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms where humidity is controlled.


What Is Engineered Hardwood?


Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer on top (the wear layer) bonded to multiple layers of plywood or HDF beneath. This cross-ply construction makes it significantly more dimensionally stable — it's much less likely to expand, contract, warp, or cup due to moisture and temperature changes.


Best for: Basements, kitchens, over radiant heat systems, and any location where moisture or temperature fluctuations are a concern.

  • Moisture resistance: Engineered hardwood wins. It handles humidity fluctuations far better than solid wood.
  • Refinishability: Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished 5-8 times over its life. Engineered hardwood can typically be refinished 1-3 times, depending on the veneer thickness.
  • Longevity: Solid hardwood can last 100+ years. Quality engineered hardwood typically lasts 25-50 years.
  • Installation: Solid hardwood requires nail-down installation to a wood subfloor. Engineered hardwood can be nailed, stapled, glued, or floated over concrete or existing floors.
  • Cost: Solid hardwood ranges from $5-$15+ per sq ft. Engineered hardwood ranges from $4-$12 per sq ft. Installation costs for engineered wood are generally lower.


Species and Hardness


Both solid and engineered hardwood are available in dozens of species. The Janka Hardness Scale measures a wood species' resistance to denting and wear:

 

  • Very Hard: Brazilian cherry (2350), hickory (1820) — excellent for high-traffic areas
  • Hard: White oak (1360), red oak (1290) — the most popular flooring choices
  • Moderate: Walnut (1010), cherry (950) — beautiful but shows wear faster
  • Soft: Pine (870), Douglas fir (660) — develop character marks, not for busy households


Finish Options

 

  • Pre-finished: Factory-applied finish with aluminum oxide hardener. Most durable, no drying time after install.
  • Site-finished: Sanded and finished after installation. Allows for custom stain matching and a seamless look, but requires 24-72 hours of dry time.


Which Should You Choose?

 

  • Choose solid hardwood for main living areas where you want maximum longevity and the ability to refinish many times over the years.
  • Choose engineered hardwood for basements, over radiant heat, in kitchens, or anywhere solid wood's moisture sensitivity is a concern.
