LVP Flooring Installation Guide: How to Install Luxury Vinyl Plank Step by Step

One of the biggest advantages of luxury vinyl plank flooring is that it's genuinely DIY-friendly. With the right preparation and a bit of patience, you can install a professional-quality floor over a weekend. Here's a complete walkthrough.

Tools and Materials You'll Need

  • LVP planks (plus 10% overage for cuts and waste)
  • Underlayment (if not pre-attached)
  • Tape measure and chalk line
  • Utility knife or vinyl plank cutter
  • Rubber mallet and tapping block
  • Pull bar (for end joints near walls)
  • Spacers (1/4-inch expansion gap)
  • Level and moisture meter

Step 1: Acclimate the Floorin

Let the LVP sit in the room for at least 48 hours before installation. This allows the planks to adjust to the room's temperature and humidity, reducing expansion and contraction after install. Keep the room between 65°F-85°F during acclimation and installation.

Step 2: Prepare the Subfloor

This is the most critical step. A bad subfloor leads to a bad floor.

  • Clean: Remove all dust, debris, adhesive residue, and high spots.
  • Level: The subfloor must be flat within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Use floor leveling compound to fill low spots. Sand or grind down high spots.
  • Dry: Check moisture levels. Concrete subfloors should test below 85% RH or 3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft using a calcium chloride test.
  • Solid: Fix any squeaky or bouncy areas in wood subfloors before proceeding.

Step 3: Install Underlayment

If your LVP doesn't have an attached underlayment, roll out a 1-2mm foam underlayment and tape seams. Do not double-up underlayment, it creates a spongy feel and can stress the locking joints.

Step 4: Plan Your Layout

Start by finding the center of the room and snapping chalk lines. Plan the layout so that you don't end up with very narrow cut pieces along the walls. A good rule: if the last row would be less than half a plank wide, shift your starting point by half a plank.

Step 5: Lay the Planks

  • Begin in the left corner of the room, groove side facing the wall.
  • Place 1/4-inch spacers against all walls to maintain the expansion gap.
  • Angle the tongue of each new plank into the groove of the previous one and press down to lock.
  • Stagger end joints by at least 6 inches between rows for structural integrity and appearance.
  • Use a pull bar and mallet to snug end joints tight near walls.

Step 6: Cut the Final Row and Install Transitions

Measure and rip-cut the final row of planks to fit. Install T-molding, reducer strips, or threshold transitions at doorways and room transitions. Install baseboards or quarter round to cover the expansion gap along walls.

Pro Tips

  • Mix planks from several boxes as you go to blend shade and texture variations.
  • Never install LVP in areas where standing water is common (e.g., directly in shower stalls).
  • For radiant heat, confirm the product is rated for use over heated floors.
